I take English speaking Skype lesson for twenty-five minutes every day. The fee for the lesson is 5000 yen a month ; 164 yen for one lesson. I think it’s very cheap.

When I went to an English school, I paid 10000 yen for 50 minutes of private lesson. I was so desperate to pass the test of the first grade of the Eiken in those days. The teacher was from England and gave me excellent lessons, but I couldn’t pay that much money for more than half a year.

The teachers at the Skype lesson are Filipinos and English is not their mother tongue, but they speak good English like natives.

A few days ago, a tutor told me that working at Rare Job can earn more money than working at public schools as a teacher or many other jobs. So many people work abroad.

I was surprised to hear that. A tutor there work for five hours at nihgt during weekdays and for eight hours weekends at most. As you know, the teaching profession is stable economically and popular these days in Japan, but in the Philippines, the job is not so popular because of the low salary.

I learn the economic situation of the country from the tutors.

The tutors are all young and capable with abundant knowledge. I hope they will have a bright future.

毎日２５分間英語スカイプレッスンを受けてます。レッスン代は一か月５０００円、一回につき１６４円です。安いです。

英会話スクールに通っていた頃、５０分のプライベートレッスンに１万円払ったことがあります。当時は、英検１級合格に向けて必死だったんです。^^;　先生はイギリス人で質の高いレッスンをしてもらえましたが、半年以上はそんなに高いレッスン代を払うことは出来ませんでした。

スカイプレッスンの先生はフィリピン人で、英語はかれらの母国語ではありません。でも、ネイティブ並みの英語を話されます。

２～３日前、レアジョブ（スカイプレッスンの会社名）の先生が、公立の学校での先生とか、他の仕事より、レアジョブでの仕事の方がたくさん収入があると言われたんです。良い収入が得られる仕事が少ないため、海外で働く人が多いと。

私は、フィリピンの大学生がお小遣い稼ぎに、働いているのかと思っていましたので、びっくりしました。彼らは、多くて、平日夜５時間、週末は午前中と夜とで８時間、レアジョブで働いています。もちろん、時間は先生によりますが。

日本では、学校の先生といえば、経済的に安定していて、最近人気のある職業です。でも、フィリピンでは収入が少ないため、あまり人気がないようです。

フィリピンの経済事情がわかりますね。

先生たちはみんな若くて、知識もあり、有能。彼らに、明るい未来があることを願います。

I found an interesting article in the magazine “President Family” today. It is about the borderline between the rich and the poor in Japan.

What do you think is an anual income of the rich people?

The borderline is 20 million yen.

Then, what about the profession of the rich?

They are doctors, dentists, accountants, CEOs and entrepreneurs. Most of them are self-employed people.

If you want to become rich, you should make a big effort to get such jobs, but I think we can enjoy our life with much lower income.

今日、雑誌プレジデントファミリーで面白い記事を見つけました。

「お金持ちと貧乏の境界線は年収でどれくらいですか？」というものです。

一般人とお金持ちの境界線は年収２０００万円あたりだそうです。

では、どんな職業の人が、年収２０００万円以上でしょう。

医師、歯科医、会計士、企業経営者が多く、ほとんどが自営業ということです。

もし、お金持ちになりたければ、その仕事につく努力をすればいいんですね。でも、大変だな～。

それより収入がずっと低くても、結構、生活を楽しめそうですけどね。

I sometimes draw pictures to get my students to understand English. My students laugh at them because they are funny or not good, but I like to see them laugh. It makes me laugh as well and feel happy.

Yesterday I draw a picture of a bear to explain the image of the preposition “on” in the class for high school students.

They laughed at the picture and one of them said, “You are not good at drawing.”

Well, actually, I’m good at drawing and painting. I just want them to concentrate on my lesson.

時々、生徒に英語を理解させるために、ホワイトボードに絵を描きます。その絵がおかしかったり、上手じゃないと、生徒は笑いますが、私は生徒が笑っているのを見るのが好きで、こちらも楽しくなり笑ってます。

昨日の高１のレッスンで、前置詞”on”のイメージを説明するのに、くまの絵を描きました。（なぜ、前置詞”on”の説明に「くま」？と思われるかもしれませんね。ここに絵を描けないのが残念。）

生徒はみんな笑って、一人が「先生、絵へた～。」（笑）

でも、実は、私、絵を描くのは好きでちょっと上手いんです。ただ、おもしろい絵を描くと生徒がレッスンに集中してくれるかなと。

You can aquire English by active learning.

It is said that it needs 4000 hours of study to pass the first grade of the Eiken test. I passed it when I thought it amounted to 4000 hours. 

The amount doesn’t include passive learning. Passive learning means the time of only taking classes and listening to English like background music. 

My English improved only when I learned actively such as reading aloud, memorizing vocabulary and sentences, speaking, listening intensively, and writing diary and essays.

Do active learning, not passive learning.

英文法に能動態、受動態というのがありますが、英語は能動の学習でしか力がつきません。

英検１級に合格するのに、４０００時間の学習が必要と言われています。私も、もうそろそろ４０００時間超えているよなと思ったころに英検１級に合格しました。

その時間は、受身の学習時間は含みません。つまり、ラジオ英会話や授業を聞いているだけの時間とか、ただ英語を聞きながしている時間です。

音読暗唱、シャドーイング、語彙や文章を覚えたり、話したり、集中して聞いたり、日記やエッセイを英語で書いたりといった能動の学習で力がついたのです。

で、その時間が４０００時間を超えてきた頃に、合格したのです。

受身の学習ではなく、能動の学習をしましょう。

Another big earthquake happened today in Fukushima just a month after the most disastrous earthquake in Tohoku.

It happened a while ago in Sendai too.

Nobody can stop them. It’s part of nature.

Human beings have the power to thrive on adversity.

I found a saying  “Sweet are the uses of adversity.”

東北大地震が起きたちょうど一か月後の今日、また、福島でマグニチュード６の地震がありました。

ちょっと前、仙台でも起きましたし。

自然災害を誰も止めることは出来ないですけど、人間は立ち直っていく力を持っていて、大災害を乗り越えてきていますよね。

こんなことわざを見つけました。「逆境のご利益というものはすばらしいものだ」

My daughter entered a high school which had its entrance ceremony last week. I also attended the ceremony and was happy to see her in the uniform which I like very much.

She decided to have extra studies of some subjects by correspondence course instead of going to juku.

The company she chose has its homepage and I looked into it today. I was surprised to see how good the site is.

It has many contents such as information on how to study for passing the exams of good universities and teacher’s blogs. 

Actually, I teach her English in my school, but I have made her take the English course too. Because I have wanted to know how other schools teach it.

It is amazing that the company has developed the system or the site so highly. Students can study in the site, even can get video lecture!

I will watch them to learn how the excellent teachers there teach.

娘が高校に入学しました。入学式は先週あり、行ってきました。私は、娘の高校の制服が大好きで、それを着ている娘の姿を見てうれしかったです。

さて、勉強ですが、塾に行く代わりに、通信教育を受けることに決めたんです。

娘が選んだ通信教育の会社は、ホームページを持っていて、今日見てみました。で、そのすごさにびっくりしました。

大学入試に関する情報とか、添削している先生のブログとか、たくさんの中身があります。

実は、英語は私の教室で娘にも教えているのですが、英語コースもとらせることにしたんです。娘の勉強にもなりますし、私も他の学校がどんな風に教えられるか知りたかったからです。（こんなこと言っちゃっていいのかな…?)

しかし、サイトがかなり高度なもので驚きました。生徒は、コンピューター上でも、テキストを読んだり、問題を解くことができますし、授業の映像まであるんです。

どのように教えられるのか、私も勉強です。

I don’t drink liquor very much. It’s partly because I can’t hold my liquor well, but the main reason for that is that I get sleepy when I drink and I’m not be able to study.

When I was studying for the first grade of the Eiken test, I abtrained from drinking for a year and a half until I finally passed it. It was extremely difficult for me to pass the test, I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to drink again, but I sticked to the resolution. Sake I drank on the evening of the day I was given the notification of success on the exam was really delicious.

I’ve become unable to drink much alcohol since then. I sometimes enjoy ume liquor now though.

私は、あまりお酒を飲みません。お酒があまり強くないせいでもありますが、飲むと眠くなり、勉強が出来ないからなんです。

英検１級を目指していた頃、合格するまで１年半禁酒しました。１級はとても難しかったので、また、お酒を飲むことは出来ないのでは…と心配しましたが、自分の決意を通しました。合格通知を受け取った日の夜飲んだ日本酒はとてもおいしかったです。

もう、自由に飲んでもいいのですが、その禁酒から、お酒があまり飲めなくなってしまいました。

時々は、梅酒などを楽しんでますけどね。
