私の塾では、英検に力を入れています。

英検は、読む、書く、聞く、話す全ての技能を伸ばせる優れた試験だと思っています。

学校英語では、読むことや、書くことに重点を置いていて、リスニングや話すことに時間をあまり、割いていません。

英検が、その足りないところをおぎなってくれます。

ですから、私は、レッスンの中で英検のリスニング、試験問題を少し時間を取って、生徒にやらせています。

３級以上になると、２次試験で面接があります。面接というと、みんな不安がるのですが、私の塾では、面接で落とさせた生徒はいません。試験前に直前練習をしてあげるからです。試験のパターンは決まっていますので、それを飲み込めば、大丈夫なんです。

社会人にも、英語学習の目標として、英検はちょうどいいと思います。

来月、英検の試験がありますね。受けられる方はがんばってください。私の生徒も。

I put a lot of effort into getting my students to study for the Eiken Test in Practical English Proficiency.

I think Eiken is an excellent test by which people can improve reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. It’s a reliable test for assessing the language proficiency of Japanese people.

In schools, teachers give priority to reading and writing but not to listening and speaking.  

Eiken makes up for the weakness of school English.

So, I take a little time and give my students some listening tests and drills of Eiken in classes.

Grade 3 to 1 have stage 2, speaking test. My students feel uneasy about it, but I’ve never failed to make them pass it. I give them some exercise just before the interview test. the pattern of the test is fixed, and they only have to understand it and practice.

It’s a good test for working adults as well as the aim of study.

Eiken is held next month. Do your best for those who will take it. My students, too.

ゴールデンウィークも終わりましたね。生徒にどうだった？と聞くと、どこかに行った子や、何もしなかったという子や、それぞれです。

また、今週から通常通りのお仕事です。

中高生は、もうすぐ試験があり、がんばってもらわないといけません。

小学生は、また、楽しくかつしっかり学習していきます。

The Golden Week ended, didn’t it? I asked my students, “How was your Golden Week?” Some went somewhere. Some did nothing special.

I’ve returned to normal business operations since yesterday.

Junior high and senior high school students are going to have tests soon. I want them to study hard for them.

Elementary school students will continue studying English enjoyably and hard.

今日は、母の日でしたね。私も午後、実家の母にお花を買ってプレゼントしました。

さて、お仕事ですが、英検２級の模試を、今日午前中に実施しました。

高３の塾生２名受験。

筆記は良かったのですが、リスニングが実力不足でした。

リスニング力をつけるには、

①毎日少しでも英語を聞く。

②リスニング問題を解く。

③答えをチェック。

④問題文を音読、リピーティング、シャドーイング。

　特に、聞き取れなかったところは重点的に。

　最後は英文を見ないでリピート、シャドーイングできるようにする。

⑤解いた問題をまた何度も聞く。

といった練習が必要です。

いつも、生徒にはこれをするように言っているのですが、やっていないようです。

英検２級のリスニング問題はセンター試験のリスニング問題対策にもなります。

リスニングの苦手な受験生が多いと思いますので、リスニングで点数を稼ぐとかなり有利です。

受験生、がんばり抜いた者が勝ちです。

I held the trail exam of Eiken this morning. Two of the third graders of a high school who are my students took it.

They were good at reading, vocabulary, and writing, but not at listening comprehension.

In order to improve listening comprehension ability, the following practice is needed. 

1. Listen to English even a little every day.

2. Try listening tests.

3. Check answers.

4. Reading aloud, repeating, shadowing of  the scripts until you can do it without looking at the scripts. Practice predorminantly the parts you couldn’t catch .

5. Listen them again and again.

I often tell them to do them, but it seems they haven’t.

They can get high scores in the listening parts of the Center Test by practicing with the listening tests of Eiken.

I don’t think many tast takers of the Center Test are good at listening, so it’s a great advantage to gain good marks in listening section.  

Victory goes to the person who can stay the course.

今朝は5時に起きて、朝食とお弁当作り。娘が、6時の電車で部活に行くといいましたので。

それから、全然眠くなくて、ずっと仕事してたりしたら、お昼前頃に頭が痛くなってきました。睡眠不足のせいです。昨夜は、12時半ごろに寝ましたから。

こんな時には、寝るのが一番で、お昼を食べたら、1時間ほど、お昼寝をしました。

今でも、まだ頭痛が残ってますが、だいぶ楽になりました。

やはり、睡眠時間はとらないといけませんね。

I got up at five this morning, and prepared breakfast and a lunchbox for my daughter. She told me last night that she would go to school to do the club activities by the 6 o’clock train.

I didn’t feel sleepy at all after that, and went about my business. Then I had a bad headache before noon. It was from lack of sleep. I went to bed at past twelve last night.

It is best for me to get a sleep when I have a headache. So I took a nap for an hour after I had lunch.

I still have it now, but feel much better.

I must have a good sleep to stay in good physical condition.

本棚の回りが、本やら、レッスンに使うものやらが、山になってましたので、今朝、整理して、もう読まないような本や、英語雑誌などは、思い切って捨てることにしました。

もったいないと思って、とっていても読まなければ場所を取るだけですし、本は増える一方ですしね。

片づけると、ずいぶん見た目もすっきりして気持ちいいです。

There were a pile of books and things used for lessons around my bookcases. I put there neat and clean this morning and decided to threw away things like English magazines and books that I won’t read any more.

If I think it’s a waste to throw books away, they only take up much room. Besides, books keeps on growing.

I felt refreshed to see the tidy room.

英検準２級の模試を今日実施しました。

受験者　高１ー２名　高２－１名　高３－１名

３名が合格ラインを超える点を取りました。１名は、残念でしたが、また、がんばってくれると思います。

テストは、客観的に実力を測ってくれるものです。テストをやってみて、意外に実力がついていたということがわかり、びっくりすることもよくあります。それは、普段のレッスンの成果や、生徒の努力の結果なのですから、うれしいことです。

テストの結果も大事ですが、もっと大事なのは、そこから、また、次なるステップに向かうことです。

どこが自分の弱点なのかを知って、そこを重点的に学習したり、復習したり、上の級の新しい問題集に挑戦したり、ですね。

今、難しいと感じていることも、練習を重ねれば、いずれは、簡単になります。英語学習も同じです。

I gave a trial test of Eiken (The pre-second grade) to four high school students today.

Three of them achieved a passing grade successfully. I feel sorry for the other one, but I’m sure she will continue her endeavor on English studies.

We can see our proficiency at English objectively by taking tests. I’m often surprised by my students’ greater ability than I expected. I’m glad at the time because it’s the result of my lessons and their effort.

The result of the test is important, but more important is to go forward to the next step ; to lay emphasis of weak points, to review lessons, to challenge a collection of past questions for upper grades, and so on.

What you think now is difficult will be easy one of these days. The same can be said to English learning.

みなさん、ゴールデンウイークどのようにお過ごしでしょうか。

私は、小中学生クラスはお休みしているのですが、高１クラス（今日）と英検準２級模試（明日）が入りました。

ですから、出かけたのは昨日だけです。

このゴールデンウィーク中に英語の勉強を頑張る予定だったのですが、普段の学習時間とそんなに変わりません。

主婦は、家の掃除もしないといけませんものね。明日は、もうちょっとがんばって学習します。

How do you spend the Golden Week?

There are no classes for elementary and junior high school students, but I gave a class to high school students and will give some high school students a trial test of Eiken tomorrow.

So, I went out only yesterday.

I had planned to study English a lot during the week, but the time of studying has been almost the same as usual.

I, a housewife, have to clean my house, too. I will study more tomorrow.

２００５年（平成１７年）２月３日付の読売新聞の切り抜きを今でも持っています。

小学１年生で英検２級に合格した女の子のお話です。

この子のお母さんは、生後６カ月で５０万円の教材を買ったそうです。英語の歌や物語のCDにビデオ、読み取り機に入れると英単語を読み上げるカードのセットも付いていて、子守唄代わりにCDを聞かせたのです。３歳で１００以上あるカードの単語を全部覚えていたといいます。

３歳で、「LCAインターナショナル・プリスクール」に入園、家でも、「ポケモン」の英語版ビデオを見せるなどして、英語の環境作りを心がけたそうです。

そして、小１で英検２級に合格。

こういう子もいるんですね。高価な教材を買っても、子どもが興味を示さなければ、無駄だったということになりますが、興味を持ち、楽しく学習出来れば、無駄にはなりません。教材の５０万円も、元をとったというところでしょうか。

無理強いするのは逆効果ですが、まだ、何もわからない赤ちゃんの頃に、子守唄代わりに英語の歌とか聞かせると、自然に英語になじんでいくのだと思います。

５０万円も出さなくても、本屋さんに行けば、CD付きの英語歌絵本が売っています。

子どもってどんな可能性を持っているかわかりません。昨日の日記の続きになりますが、小さなお子さんをお持ちのお母さん、子どもの将来のために、考えてみられてはどうでしょうか。

I still have a newspaper clipping about a girl who passed the second grade of the Practical Proficiency Test when she was a first grader of elementary school.

The girl’s mother bought her some educational materials for learning English which cost 500,000 yen when she was a six-month baby. The materials included some CDs and videos of English songs and stories and an English reading device with English word cards. The mother made her baby listen to them like a lullaby. She was said to have learned more than 100 English words at the age of three.

She entered LCA International Preschool when she was three. She was made to expose to English even at home by watching ”Pokemon” DVD in English.

Then, she passed the test as I mentioned.

It’s amazing to know there’s such a girl. Even if we buy expensive materials for our children, if they don’t show any interest in them, it’s a waste of money, but if they do, it’s worth it. It can be said that the mother recovered her investment.

It’s not to good to force children to study, but they get used to English naturally when they are baby and listen to it like a lullaby. 

You don’t have to pay much money. You can find good English picture books with CDs at bookstores at a low price.

Children have limitless potential. Mothers who have little children, why don’t you try it?

A peddler from a drug company visited my house to check medicines left with my household the other day. He asked about my English school. At what age can a child start English at your school? I answered that I teach from elementary school to high school students. He said he had a six-month baby and his wife thinks English is important and even small children should learn English. I recommend that they make the baby listen to English songs and watch DVDs for kids. Small children are sensitive to sound. Once a child get familiar with English sound, it will be of great benefit to him/her.

置き薬の会社の方が先日来られました。私の英語教室のことについて聞かれたのですが、何歳から教えておられるのですかと。私は、小学生から、高校生まで教えていますとお答えしました。

その方には、６カ月のお子さんがあり、奥さんが子どもに英語を習わせようとお考えのようです。私は、小さいうちに、英語の歌を聞かせたり、子ども向けの英語DVDを見ることをお勧めしました。ピアノを習うことで、子どもは絶対音感を身につけますよね。英語も同じで、いったん正しい音を身につけるとそれはその子にとって大きな利益になります。大人になってからでは、かなり苦労します。私がそうであるように。^^;

ここで、思い出したのですが、ホームページを通じて、知り合いになった方から、子ども向けの英語学習サイトを教えて頂きました。小さいお子さんを持っておられるお母さん方、子どもが喜びそうなサイトですので、見せてあげてみてください。子どもが興味を持って何度も見るようでしたら、将来、英語が出来る可能性大ですよ。
